Thinking about buying an Auto GPS System?
It is no longer necessary to pull out the big road atlas to find the best route to a destination. Whether it be across town or across the nation, a GPS system makes it easy to find just about any place. GPS stands for Global Positioning System. The
re are thirty one satellites up in space that can communicate with land-based receivers to let that receiver know down to almost the inch, its precise location. Receivers come in different grades from ones used by land surveyors, which are highly accurate to handheld models that are accurate down to just a few feet.
Built into the GPS For Cars receiver are maps of the part of the world where the receiver will be sold. An off-the-shelf unit purchased in the US to be used in a car or truck will contain detailed maps down to the street level. Preprogrammed into the GPS unit are businesses, hospitals, gas stations, rest areas, attractions, restaurants, veterinary offices and many other points of interest that a traveler may be seeking.
GPS for Cars utilizes touch-screen technology. All that is required for one to navigate the device is touching the screen. Navigation can begin by typing in an address for the unit to find, or by selecting from a menu list containing points of interest. When the GPS receiver is first turned on, it picks up signals from some of the GPS satellites up in space. It then calculates its location on Earth by using those signals and as a result, is able to search for and bring up points of interest in relation to its current location. For example, if someone is looking for the closest burger selling franchise restaurant to their current location, the unit will tell them what is close by whether it is in California or Maine.
There is no longer a need to fret over situations such as finding a new doctor's office that is downtown, or the place where a delivery is supposed to go. Just type in the address and the GPS for Cars system will calculate a route to the specific location from where it is currently located. Advanced features allow users to refine parameters to avoid highways, sidestep toll-roads, and take the quickest route among other options depending on the unit purchased. When providing directions, the route is both called out by voice and shown on the screen. A human sounding voice gives turn-by-turn instructions while the onscreen images graphically show instructions that are helpful when attempting to get through even the most difficult to navigate, routes.
GPS Installation
After you have the GPS installation on your car or truck completed by a car gps expert, you will notice you have the capability to receive live traffic information
(Not included in some modules). Some GPS for Cars units include a one year subscription to the fee-based traffic reporting service while others, do not. There is no fee to access the signals provided by the Global Positioning Satellite System. The live traffic information service picks up traffic information along the route and can reroute around construction, accidents, or other traffic delays. It can be a real time saver but is not foolproof. The traffic information has to be accurate and reported for it to be of use, which could possibly vary depending on where one is at.
Many car GPS system units come installed with Bluetooth capability, which enables the use a cell phone through the GPS unit. When paired with a compatible cell phone, Bluetooth enabled GPS receivers provide the capability of hands-free calling
. It also allows for points-of-interest on the GPS (such as a restaurant), to be directly dialed from the information already in the GPS. Points-of-interest, phone numbers, hours and other information are usually part of the information stored in the GPS receiver's database of information. This is a great feature to have and enjoy after the GPS installation is complete on your car or truck.
The amount money saved on fuel by not having to drive around and get stuck in traffic can pay for a GPS receiver. The prices have come down over the last few years as the units gain more and more exciting features. For example, travel and language guides can be downloaded into some GPS receivers and therefore, providing information previously not available in a GPS receiver. Celebrity voices can also be downloaded to provide turn-by-turn instructions, and the onscreen
icon displayed to represent vehicle location can now be customized to look like the actual vehicle being driven.
Many new vehicles come with an auto GPS system built in. For those vehicles without a built in unit, there are many brands and types to choose from and can be installed by a professional car gps expert at your local ICE location.
